Key details
- The neckline is cut at its finished edge. The scoop on the front and back is drawn on the finished line, because the bands cover it. Add nothing, trim nothing, cut exactly on the line. Get this wrong and the piece is gone.
- The cut scoop looks alarmingly low and wide on paper. The bands stand up from the seam rather than wrapping over the edge, so they close the neckline in by about 2.3 cm all the way round. Measure the finished garment, not the paper.
- Both bands are cut to exactly the same length and sewn to the scoop in one pass. The contrast is the taller of the two and sits behind, so once pressed up you see about 1 cm of main fabric with 3 cm of print standing above it. Main band cut 3.45 cm wide, contrast 7.6 cm.
- The contrast band is cut on the true bias, because a strip cut on the straight grain ripples on the outer edge of a curve that deep and strains on the inner one. Cut that strip first, before committing the rest of the contrast; it is the one piece that cannot be fudged.
- The contrast requirement is small. One bias strip 7.6 cm wide and up to 76 cm long is all it has to yield.
- The sleeve really is three-quarter. Underarm to cuff is 30 to 32 cm on every size, landing just below the elbow. For full length, add to the sleeve before cutting and keep the 1.6 cm hem.
- Sizing: pick the size whose chest is 6 to 10 cm under your own.
- This tee shares a body block with the Fitted V-Neck Cap-Sleeve Tee, so the chest grade is identical in both.
