Description

A step-by-step guide to drafting a basic collar from your own neck measurements, then sewing it on. The collar is drafted from the centre back and cut on the fold, with a diagram at each stage.

What you need
  • Your back neck and front neck measurements
  • Paper and a ruler
  • A curve for the front of the collar
  • Interfacing for the upper collar
How it works

Part 1 drafts the collar from the centre back. Your back neck and front neck measurements place the shoulder notch and the front of the collar, and the front edge is then curved up to the outer edge.

Part 2 traces the collar off and cuts an upper and an under collar on the centre-back fold. It then sews the collar on in six steps.

In the download
  • Drafting a Basic Collar, a 2-page PDF
  • Part 1, the draft
  • Part 2, cutting and sewing: steps 1 to 6

Measurements are in inches. The draft has no seam allowance, so add your own on every edge except the centre-back fold. The diagrams are not to scale.
