An asymmetric top with one shoulder covered by a wide folded band and the other bare, and six pleats that pull one side up to the waist while the other stays at the hip. Three pattern pieces, three pieces of fabric, four seams, and no notions.

Pattern specification

Size range
XS–XXL
Skill level
Confident beginner
Recommended fabric
A soft, drapey knit. Modal or viscose jersey, a fine silk jersey, or a light rayon-elastane blend. A stable cotton interlock or a ponte will hold the pleats out instead of letting them fall.
Colours shown
Black.
Yardage
0.7 m of 150 cm wide fabric for XS to M, 0.8 m for L to XXL.
Notions required
None. No interfacing, no lining, no fastenings.
Stretch required
A little, but drape matters far more. The top skims rather than clings, and it is the fall of the fabric that makes the diagonal read.
Seam allowance
1 cm on the side seams, the top edge, the armhole edge and the band. Hem 1.6 cm, turned once.

Finished garment, measured flat. Chest is half the measurement all the way round. The two lengths are underarm to hem, on the covered-shoulder side and on the pleated side. Inches / centimetres.

Key details

  • Three pleats go on the front and three on the back, marked PLEAT 1, PLEAT 2 and PLEAT 3 on both pieces with direction arrows.
  • The pleat marks are the same on every size. Measured up the pleated side edge from the hem corner they fall at 4.2, 8.0, 10.5, 14.2, 16.7 and 20.5 cm, XS to XXL, front and back.
  • Each pleat swallows 3.75 cm, so that side seam finishes 11.3 cm shorter than it was cut. Measure the edge after basting and check.
  • Nothing joins at the shoulder. There is no shoulder seam on this top; the band is one closed ring that carries the fabric over.
  • The band is cut 17.3 cm deep, folds to 8.6 cm, and shows 7.6 cm finished. It is cut the same length as the edge, so nothing needs stretching on.
  • The hem is not level and should not be. It sits at the hip on the covered side and rises to about the waist on the pleated side.
  • Cut in a single layer, right side up. The front and back are mirror images, so folding the fabric double gives you two fronts.
  • Sizing runs the other way from the tanks in this range. Pick the size whose chest is at or just over your own.
