A tank with two fronts. One face is a high, wide boat neck that covers the shoulders; turn it round and the other is a deep scoop with two narrow straps. Five pattern pieces, six pieces of fabric, four seams, and not one raw edge anywhere.

Finished garment lying flat and unstretched. Chest and hem are half the measurement all the way round. Length is the boat-neck edge to the hem. Inches / centimetres.

Key details

  • Because both faces show, no raw edge can appear anywhere. French seams take the side seams and strap joins, wrapped binding takes the neckline, scoop, straps and armholes, and the hem is double-turned.
  • Every allowance on this pattern divides neatly in two, which is deliberate. The 1 cm side seam is 0.4 plus 0.6; the 1.6 cm hem is 0.8 turned twice.
  • Nothing is overlocked. An overlocked edge would show on the other face, so the workflow says outright to switch the overlocker off if you own one.
  • Thread has to match exactly, because every stitch line is visible from both sides. There is no inside to hide it on.
  • Skip the brand label, or tack it in loosely so it can be taken out.
  • The scoop face drops 18 to 20 cm below the strap seams, while the boat face dips only 2.9 to 3.9 cm. Check the scoop against yourself before cutting; raising it on the paper means shortening the neckline binding to match.
  • Sizing is not the usual rule. Pick the size whose flat chest is 8 to 12 cm under your own.
  • This tank shares a body block with the Ruched Scoop-Neck Tank, so the chest and hem grade is identical in both.
